Pietro Antonio Locatelli - Violin Virtuoso
Pietro Antonio Locatelli

This week on Diving Into Baroque we feature the life and work of the Italian composer and violin virtuoso Pietro Antonio Locatelli. Specifically we'll be Diving Into Op. 3 L'Arte del Violino - The Art of the Violin. This work consists of 12 concertos and we will hear 3 of them on this episode. The final concerto of the twelve, nicknamed "The Labyrinth" is notorious for its exceedingly difficult capricci. Locatelli wrote the following inscription beneath the first-movement capriccio: "Laberinto armonico: 'Facilis aditus; difficilis exitus.'" This can be translated to mean, "Harmonic Labyrinth: Easy to enter; difficult to escape!" It is a wonderous display of his brilliance and we'll feature it here.
